More than 50 members attended the Traditional Bowhunters of Georgia Southern Zone Group hunt at Chickasawhatchee WMA the weekend of February 20. Members from as far away as Canada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, South Carolina and north Georgia made the trek to Leary, Ga. to take on the swamp.
The campground on Mud Creek Road was full of traditional bowhunters ready for a weekend of comradery and pig stalking. The spirits were dampened but not extinguished by a myriad of thunderstorms throughout the weekend. Though the weather wasn't the greatest, 3 members still killed pigs. Mark Willingham, Cain Almond and Joey Spires all managed to put some pork on the ground. Several other members had confessed misses and even one squirrel was harvested with a bow. Numerous members saw alligators and one was almost snake bitten during the abnormally hot February weather.
Members returned to camp for the group meal of more than 50lbs of shrimp that was cooked on Friday evening by Southern Zone Representative Jace Heard in one of the finest low country boils to ever be cooked in the state of Georgia. After the meal a variety of door prizes were awarded in a drawing of attendees. Prizes included an XOP ION Hang-on stand, KuduPoint Broadheads and a $300 gift certificate to Creekwalker Trading Company donated by James Loper. Stewart McAulay brought two of his custom foam pig targets for prizes as well.
All members went home with at least one pig, because they were given a t-shirt with a wild boar on the back. Almost half of the attendees were first-time group hunt attendees and there more several father-son duos in the mix with sons as young as ten and old as in their 30s. It was a grand time and we look forward to the next one.
